What a Fogged Window Actually Is, and Why Cleaning Never Works

A dual pane window is two sheets of glass held apart by a spacer bar and sealed at the edge with butyl or polysulfide sealant. The spacer holds a desiccant that absorbs whatever moisture sneaks through during the unit's life. Once the sealant cracks, the desiccant saturates, argon leaks out, and humid air moves in and out with every temperature swing. The haze you see is mineral deposits and condensation on the inside faces of the glass, where no cloth can reach.

That is why a fogged window cannot be cleaned, resealed with caulk, or drilled and vented back to clear. The sealed unit is a consumable part. Replacing it restores clarity and insulation; the frame, sash, screen, and hardware stay exactly as they are.

Glass-Only Replacement vs a New Window

The right answer depends on the frame around the glass. We inspect every opening at the free in-home estimate and tell you which column you fall in.

Insulated Glass Units We Build to Match

Every replacement IGU is manufactured to the exact size we pull from your sash, in the glass package your home needs.

Low-E Coatings and Argon Fill

Most Riverside homes want a Low-E coating on the second surface to reject solar heat, with argon between the panes to slow conduction. We match the existing coating tint so a single new unit does not read greener or bluer than its neighbors, and we can step up to a higher-performance coating on west and south elevations that bake from June through September.

Tempered, Laminated, and Obscure Glass

Code requires tempered safety glass within 24 inches of a door, in tub and shower walls, and in large panels near the floor. Laminated glass adds a PVB interlayer for security and quiet along SR-91 and the 60. Obscure and frosted patterns for bathrooms are stocked in the common builder textures so the replacement matches the rest of the house.

Spacer Systems

Warm-edge spacers in black, gray, or mill finish replace the older aluminum bars that conducted heat straight through the edge of the glass. Matching the spacer color is a small detail that keeps the new unit invisible from the street.

What Changes the Quote for Fogged Glass Replacement

We measure before we price, so the written estimate is exact. These are the factors that move it:

  • Unit size and count. A run of matching picture units costs less per unit than one odd shape.
  • Glass package. Low-E, argon, tempered, laminated and obscure glass each change the unit cost.
  • Glazing method. Some vinyl sashes take a snap-in stop; older aluminum frames are wet-glazed and take longer.
  • Access. Second-story and over-roof units need staging.
  • Sash condition. If the sash has to be rebuilt or replaced, we say so before you approve anything.

Every cost question ends the same way: a free in-home estimate with the numbers in writing.

How We Replace a Fogged Window in Riverside

  1. Free in-home estimate. We confirm seal failure, check the frame, and measure the daylight opening and overall unit size.
  2. Glass order. The IGU is built to size with the matching coating, spacer, and safety rating.
  3. Swap day. We remove the sash or stops, lift out the failed unit, clean the glazing channel, and set the new unit on fresh setting blocks and sealant.
  4. Reseal and test. We re-glaze, reinstall the sash, check operation and locks, and clean the glass inside and out.
  5. Haul-away. The old unit leaves with us.

FAQ

Fogged glass questions

Can a fogged dual pane window be defogged instead of replaced?

Drill-and-vent defogging clears the haze temporarily but leaves you with a single pane's insulation and no argon. We do not offer it. Replacing the sealed unit restores the window's original performance and comes with a glass warranty.

Do I have to replace the frame to fix fogged glass?

Usually not. If the vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum or wood frame is square and sound, we replace only the insulated glass unit inside it. We recommend a full window only when the frame itself has failed.

How long does it take to get replacement glass in Riverside?

The unit is manufactured to size after we measure, then installed in a single visit. Standard Low-E dual pane units turn around quickly; tempered, laminated and obscure glass add a little lead time.

Will the new glass match my other windows?

Yes. We match the Low-E coating tint, spacer color, and grid pattern so the replacement reads the same as its neighbors from inside and out.

Why did only the west-facing windows fog up?

Edge sealant fails from heat cycling. West and south elevations in Riverside see glass temperatures far above the air temperature every afternoon from May through October, so those seals fail first.

Is fogged glass covered by a warranty?

Many manufacturers warrant sealed units against seal failure for a set period. Bring your original paperwork to the estimate; if the unit is still covered we will tell you and help you claim it before charging for a replacement.

Can you replace fogged glass in a sliding patio door?

Yes, though door panels are large and tempered by code, so we compare the glass-only price against a new door at the estimate. Older doors with worn rollers usually make more sense to replace whole.

Does replacing the glass unit improve energy efficiency?

It restores the insulation the window lost when the argon leaked out, and if you choose a higher-performance Low-E coating it improves on the original. The new unit ships with its NFRC label so you can see the U-factor and SHGC.
